What is the Cordoba filigree?
The Cordoba filigree is a delicate piece of jewelry made of small silver threads. The manufacture of these pieces dates back to the Middle Ages, when Cordoba, as the capital of Al-Andalus, became the largest exporter of jewelry in the world.
However, these pieces ceased to be profitable when new production processes are introduced into the jewelry store. In the traditional ways the work started with the manufacture of the threads after what they began to work by drawing the required forms, being in this style where the creativity of each craftsman is manifested although there are several archetypes of very repeated figures.
What is the experience of Cordoba filigree?
Guided by the craftsman, Juan Jiménez, the experience is based on the knowledge of the history and evolution of the silverware of Córdoba from the 16th century to the present. We rescue the traditional filigree technique and identify what distinguishes it from that of the rest of the world. We have testimonies of old Cordovan goldsmiths and we travel in time with their words, in order to understand the current moment that this Cordoba tradition lives.
In the workshop, we find the traditional tools, in old jeweler benches, in a magical environment; at the gates of the courtyards of Alcazar Viejo, in front of the caliph baths and overlooking the Minaret of the Mosque of Cordoba.
