What are the Hammam?
A hammam, also known as an Arab bath, a Turkish bath or a haman, is a steam bath that includes cleaning the body and relaxing. By extension they are also named like this, the buildings in which they were and whose structure responded to the different rooms that the bathroom process requires. From its Arabic name al-ḥamma derive the Spanish toponyms «Alhama» and the Portuguese «Alfama».
The process of taking a Turkish bath is a wet variant of a sauna, but it is more related to Roman bathing practices. Taking a Turkish bath first demands relaxation in a room (known as a warm room) heated with a continuous flow of hot air that allows the batter to breathe freely. Then, they move into an even hotter room (known as a hot room) before diving into a cold pool. After having a full body wash and receiving a massage, they are finally removed to the cooling room for a period of relaxation. Visitors are given a cloth, called futa, that is worn around the waist like a pareo, in addition to serving as a towel.
The reservation is subject to schedule availability at Hammam Al-Ándalus. We recommend making the reservation 48 hours in advance.
